Se7en (Opening Credits)

___________________________________________________________________

Shot 1

In this shot I have chosen it is a extreme close up of a person hand who is holding a safety blade, they have used this shot so that the audience can see the details of the person cracked dirty fingers and fingernails and so they have an impression of the character. The fact that the finger and fingernails are all cracked and dirty might give the audience an impression that the character is a male because it is very unlikely that a woman would have such dirty nails in stero-typical way it would most probably a male hands. A close up has been used to create an image
because of the way the hands look it creates an image of what his face looks like and that would be based around what his fingers and nails look like so it would mostly be a scruffy dirty man who doesn't care about his appearance which then leads question about what his personality would be like.
There is quite a bit of lighting in this shot so that the dirt in his finger nails are contrasted in the bright scene of the background, it seems that the only light in the scene is produced by the daylight that might be shining through a window. You notice that the background is a blur so that the audience can only focus on what the man is doing and holding which focuses the audience's attention and  their interest toward what will he do with the safety blade.
The sounds in the scene is diegetic which means it can be heard by the character in the scene and the sound is of all the tools he is using and has use so it makes a screechy noise and electrical sound which makes the audience notice how much noise the tools they might use make such horrible nois+es and so it brings a part of the film into the audience everyday life style.

Shot 2

In this shot they male character has changed the activity to writing on paper and the shot they have used is a close up because it allow the audience to be able to see in detail what he is doing but also how long he has been writing for and that allows the audience to consider wether or not he has been doing this often or not. Again in this shot you can see the dirty finger nails up close but they are not as dirty as before which raises questions as to why that might be. It also portrays the male character to be hard working and an intellectual because he writes, but his dirty hand portrays him as a busy male that does not have time for grooming because of what he does.
The fact that the writing he has already done is blurry could suggest that it has be done on purpose show adds effect and makes the audience more interested about what he is writing so much about.
You can see that the source of light is coming from the left and seems to be the only source of light that could be daylight from a window which causes very dark shadows over the rest of his hand but lets the audience see how much he has already written.
The lettering used in this scene a very pale pink and it looks like very scruffy hand writing style of font has been used maybe to state a point that the lack of technology which could also be the reason he is writing and not typing the information on a computer.
The sound being used is now diegetic tools that almost sound like doctors tools and surgical electronics, a non diegetic beat is being used to emphasise his work it also adds mystery to the work he is doing. They use a lot of the colour black to symbolise that this film will contain death which gives detail about the theme and events of this horror film.

Shot 3

This shot is a close up of  the writing and red ink where photographs are dipped in the effect this has on the audience is that they have more than one thing to focus on in detail, you can see the photograph or all the writing on the paper. The colours used in the scene is interesting and grabs the audience attention because it introduces the colour red and in this context it is the ink that photos get dipped to help them develop but it can also symbolise blood even though its connotation is stop. The red has a bright contrast against the white paper focusing the audience attention to the red ink then what grabs the audience attention is what is in the ink a photograph of what seems of a person but it is distorted so that it make the audience want to find out who it might be. You notice that the shot has been altered because the pen is the wrong way around. The fact that the male character has dipped his photographs in red ink could give the audience more information about him, it shows that he is a professional and that he likes to use all the right equipment.
The lettering is now a pale white and is still in the same font as the other lettering I looked at which then contradicts what they audience might think about him being professional.
the light is bright so that the audience can see the detail that is happening in the shot such as the photo and the writing. The non- diegetic music at this point is almost very alien like and almost sounds like a radio tuning when a radio station is not found but the beat from the previous scene I looked at has increased its tempo which builds up the tension for the audience making this scene feel dangerous.

Shot 4

This is a close up of the male character hand applying some sort of binder with tape on to a paper and a close up has been used to show that to the audience. His hand is dirty again but this time you can see a bandage on his thumb which could impersonate that he is careless and clumsy and that maybe he did it to himself but it could also mean that he is a victim and he had this done to him. The bandage is a dirty white which could raise a question of how long ago it happened and if it still hurt why is he still working so hard. Even though you can see the background you cant make out exactly what that blue item is or what it could be because the camera has focused on the hand and the binder and what seems to be sheets of paper beneath.
The lighting in this scene is coming in from the right side of the shot and it appears to be produced by daylight which implies that it is coming in through a window. The non diegetic sound is like radio station and the tempo of the beat has slowed down it reminds me of the music from detectives murder cases which could imply what the theme of the horror might be about.

Shot 5

This last shot I have looked at is an extreme close up of his hand and it allow the audience to see very clearly that he is holding a needle in between his fingers, in this scene it also allows the audience to have a clearer look at his hand, cracked skin and dirty fingernails and allow them to think for themselves how the rest of him must look like.
The character is being portrayed as a male hard working stero-typical type of guy who is professional but doesn't seem to care about hygiene. The space in this shot has been filled with just the needle and his hands it shows the contrast to how smooth the needle to how rough his finger and hand are.
He is stroking the needle which is ironic if he like to feel that kind of surface when his hands are so rough.
The fact that they have used an extreme close up means that whats happening in this shot is really important and they want the audience to remember this because it might be an important part of the film. The lighting in this piece is a typical daylight source coming from a window most likely but it creates careful shadow across his finger and across the crease of his thumb that the audience can actually see the skin and the individual skin cells which the audience can see because of the shadow created by the right lighting. Even though there is mostly black in this scene that is created by the shadows but in the background it is also black too which can strongly symbolise death and the fact that this is a gloomy horror film project tiling it theme across to the audience.
The sound in the scene is a constant drone almost like the beat of a train track and it helps the needle scene come across to the audience as gross because it looks like the male character is pulling the needle out of his fingers which is horrible.

Trick-r-Treat - opening credits

__________________________________________________________________________

Shot 1

In the first shot I have chosen to look at there are many things in the scene but what grabs the audiences attention is the fact that the camera is zooming in on the young lady this is done so that the audience can see all detail on her face which is covered in blood and a hockey puck in her mouth  which could suggest that she is in a very dangerous situation. Notice that the young lady is blonde and in stero-typical conventions that can suggest that she is vulnerable which could be the reason that she looks the way she does. The blood that streaming down from her head down to her face could indicate that she has been hurt by someone or herself but it could also mean that something happened to someone else and their blood splattered on her. You notice that in the shot her facial expression can be expressed as two expression it could be that she is shocked but also mean that she is scared an example her eyes are very wide and raised eyebrows, another example is her widely disproportional mouth which I assume it has been altered to fit in a hockey puck. The hockey puck in her mouth makes her face turn into a square shape which overall can suggest that the young lady is not human or no longer human.
The colour scheme used has a very blaze effect the shot is filled in with orange fire of the fire beneath her face which makes that almost ghostly effect and increases the shadows across her face making her look more dramatic and a touch more scary. The colour scheme used around her could symbolise and project tile the theme of the film because orange symbolises halloween but the colours connotation could get ready which overall could suggest that this film is in fact a horror and that it mainly revolves around halloween.
The music in the background is played by an orchestra and its an intense beating which helps builds up tension as we zoom in on her face. It is a typical screechy-ness of the violins and is perfect for this shot because it builds up tension as to what might happen and makes the waiting to find out what happens next more dramatic.

Shot 2

As we go along the film we can see that they have introduced a comic book animation of the film whilst the directors, editors etc. names come up in the white writing so that we can see them behind such dark and gloomy animation. As you can see in the second shot I have chosen to look at is of the title and we know this because the shot before this is when the title appears it is now been in-printed as a title of the comic book which could imply that people read the comic book and know what happened, it could also imply that theres is an villain and maybe a hero involved in the story. In this medium shot we can see a couple of comic book some of their pages and a painted black pumpkin which emphasise on the halloween theme another way that halloween is presented is the fact that Trick r Treat is the title and the audience know that Trick or Treat is what children say when they knock on the door and it could suggest that children are involved in this film. They have used this sort of shot to show that the audience can see what I assume is the main character 'Sam' who is just a kid.
Sam appears to be dressed in a halloween costume that looks like a scarecrow which we all know its meant to scare crows away but in this context could imply that Sam may just want to scare away people. He also has a lolly with a smiley face but it appears to be dripping some red substance which could be blood or the red sweetness of the lolly which engages the audience to find out which one it is. The images around the comic book are the page that go in the comic book and we can see Sam in clothes but still wearing the mask of the scarecrow and you can see Sam in a room by himself which can raise concern that a young boy does not have any friends which can attract the audience to ask why that might be.You also can see the photos of kids with pumpkin heads which is scary because pumpkins and children are associated with halloween. Sam is portrayed as a young boy which could suggest his vulnerable and the fact that he is young could suggest he has a creative imagination which could be good but seeing as its a scary film we know his imagination is unfortunate.
The lettering on the comic book is very childish the characters are straight and simple like a child's lettering. The effect of the light coming through the writing makes it seem as though the lettering has been carved out like a pumpkin and the light is shining through overall making it seem like a jack-o-lantern which fits in with halloween theme. The colour of red can symbolise blood but its connotation could be stop. The fact the way the bright light is shining through the lettering could imitate people view on death and how when people die they see the bright light at the end of the tunnel.

Shot 3

This scene I have chosen has used is a medium shot so that the audience can see a sack being dragged through some leaves on a wet pavement. You notice that the sack is dirty and was meant to be originally a white colour, the bottom of the sack has a big dark brown stain which could have been made in many ways for example the sack could contain a substance which is making the sack dirty from the inside and from the context that we know it is probably sweets from trick or treating, another reason for the sack to be dirty could be the dragging along the wet and dirty pavement but the effect it has on the audience when it focuses on the sack for such a long time is that its lets the audience use their imagination and lets them believe that there could be almost any thing inside the sack. In this scene you can not see what exactly the character dragging the sack is wearing or what he looks like but we instantly assume that he is most likely to be in a halloween costume. The main focus in the shot is the sack and the leaves on the wet pavement but we can also see some litter on top of the leaves, so the size of the shot has been used so that the audience sees only this.
In the shot the lettering in a clear white contrasting the dark scene in the background and it uses a very straight forward font and size but you can see that the name of the Director of Photography is in a much larger font than the rest.
In the shot we can see some orange leaves which go with the theme that has been picked up through out the previous scene and opening. The orange leaves suggest that it is autumn which backs up the theory that this is happening in a halloween period. The white sack is a sharp contrast of the grey almost black pavement and it allows the audience to see just how dirty the sack is.
the fact that a white sack has been use it can symbolise a ghostly image but it connotation could be clean which is why irony is shown in this shot.
The non- diegetic music is carried on through the entrance of the film and is now more of an calmer but still scary build up to what could be in the sack and why is the character going.

Shot 4

In this shot I have chosen you can see that the camera has made a swift move so that they can see what is surrounding the character. They have used a medium shot for this and it an ables the audience to see detail and the scenery. In the scene there are three characters but two of which cam not been seen properly because one has a mask and another has their back towards the camera, the one character that is visible is of man and he being portrayed as a wealthy man because he is in trouser and a white collar shirt he can also be portrayed as smart because he is wearing a pair of glasses and in stero-typical conventions he would appear either smart or a nerd. The man is holding an grocery paper bag and he has an annoyed and bored expression on his face as if he has been waiting for to long. I think that this character is important in the film because out of the three he is the only one you can see well.
The size of the shot allows the audience to glance that they are standing outside general store and you may have notice that the general store has been decorated in a halloween theme, we can tell this because of the witch and the scary pumpkin on the side of the door and by the hanging decorations on the stores door which can confirm that it is during a halloween period.  A lot of the colour orange has been used because the camera only takes a few second of this shot before it turns back to the sack so they want the audience to confirm in their minds that the film  it is during halloween and because orange symbolise halloween it is a good colour to imply it.
The type of lighting used lets the audience focus on the many thing in the scene and allows them to see them in detail. The lighting seems to be coming from a street lamp so it creates some shadows giving the scene a mysterious effect. There also seems to be lighting coming from inside the general stores which could imply that it's closed or it's about to be opened and that could be the reason as to why the man is waiting so impatiently.

Shot 5

The last scene I have picked for Trick r Treat is a few seconds before the end of the opening sequence and a close up has been used so that the audience can only see the shadow and not where the character is walking into or where he is. They have also used a close up so that the audience can see all the un important detail such as the leaves which could play a part in the film later.
The size of the shadow is even more disproportional when the character carries on walking along the path and it is the shadow effect which make the character seem dangerous and mysterious and increases the question on who the character might be.
The type of lighting used in this shot is very scarce and the only light source that there seems to be is the light coming from where the character is walking towards which again intimidates that near death experience of the light being at the end of the tunnel which could suggest that this character is going to get hurt or some other character will. The fact that this scene is filled with the colour black could symbolise death and horror but the white shine of the light creating the shadow implies mystery in the theme of the film. The lettering in this shot is used in again simple font and is white so that it can be seen against the dark scene behind, notice though that the name of the writer and director is in capital letters whilst the rest is not this allows the audience to remember his name more.
The non- diegetic music is being played by an orchestra and the symbols are been clash together gives that piece of music a bit more of dramatic effect making the scene more intense for the audience. The beat of the music is almost in tune with the footsteps of the character walking along the path and creates tension as to what might happen next in the film, it also creates the illusion that the character is dangerous and that you don't want him walking up to you.

Evaluation of Preliminary Task

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge form and conventions of real media product?

Our preliminary task uses many styles of convention such as match-on-match, reverse shot, panning and close-ups. For an example we have used match-on-match as the main character walks across the waiting room up to the office door then as the main character walks in through the office. We used reverse shot for when the two people in our preliminary task are in conversation with another. We also used a tilt convention from the feet to the whole body ending it on the face of the character so that the audience can see the main character body language. We have used many close up of the three characters waiting nervously in the waiting room so that the audience can feel the anticipation of the three characters some of them fidgeting with their hands others tapping their foot.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our preliminary task represent a case of mental illness, a particular social group because it revolves around a mentally unstable character it show her instability and what caused that instability it also shows her trying hard to recover for her illness and how the illness effect others around her.

Which kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

If our preliminary task was a film movie I think it would be distribute by many companies all over the globe for example Hammer Film Production could distribute it because the company is well known for horror films.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

I think that the audience age range would vary it would all depends if the certain personal enjoys a horror film but we have tried and aimed the task into the younger viewers eyes so mostly teens and adults in their mid-twenties but of course it is suitable for a much older age range.

How did you attract/address your audience?

We made sure that the clothing was in keeping with the target audience so for that we made sure that the main character was dressed like a teen/early 20's by wearing denim jeans and a low cropped jumper with a fashionable hair style that most of our target audience would most probably have.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Through all our work on a 2 minute film I have learned that through filming, editing, and putting together our preliminary task we have come across different types of of new technology and new software. I have worked with editing parts before this project and so I did know how to edit this easily and simply but overall I learned about camera shots and how to add effect to the task by using different types of angles, which angle is more appropriate to use in a specific scene.
