Final Task and Preliminary Task

Final Task
The Demon Human

Preliminary Task

Evaluation Question 7 - Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Tagged Final Piece

I have added taggs to our final piece to explain what we used that we haven't before in our preliminary task why we used this specific techniques and what effect I hope it had on the audience as they are watching.

Looking back from our preliminary task to our final task we have improve because we took a lot more time with our main task and had a lot more planning and research involved than our preliminary task.

We looked more in to what our film should be about and looked up different types of psychological horror for inspiration on how we would represent a plot in a two minute opening sequence. After our final piece I feel much more comfortable with filming and editing especially, than I did in our preliminary task because I know know about the different conventions of camera angles and how different ones can suggest different emotions or how editing can create different atmosphere such as a soundtrack can change the whole mood to your piece. I feel that I have learnt a lot but still hope to develop my knowledge on the film industry.

Evaluation Question 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Technologies Video

Here is a video put together to present what we learnt durring the proccess of our main task and what we use to create and finalise the opening.
WARNING IF THE TAGGS DO NOT COME UP CLICK ON YOUTUBE ON BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER

Evaluation Question 5 - How would you attract/address your audience?

Poster

For our inspiration of our poster we have looked at 'The Afterlife' poster which also has the the three ghostly effect of their main character. We have also looked 'The Ward' poster who has also inspired us to put the other two images of the main character by her sides in different ways. We have chosen to use red font because it is a horror and because red is the connotation for blood and lust but we have chosen whiten for the other writing in white because we think white can relate to insanity and mental institutes.
We blanked out the eyes to attract our audience and to inform the audience that she is a crazy person who is being possessed and is longer human.
We added the other two images of her so that the audience can see that she has different personalities through the film and that the game is actually within herself.

Poster Ideas

The first idea we had was to have an extreme close up of an eye of our main character Anna Smith and in the centre of the eye have a dark gloomy image perhaps of her standing up this would be a good way to portray our character as a mental person because it gives the sense that she is lost which is why the picture would have been an image of Anna at her worst state looking scared, distraught and vulnerable.

The idea above shows half of our main character as a normal young lady and the other half as a distraught with dirt and blood on her face, we came up with this idea because we wanted to show the contrast between the two personality of the same character. We put blood and tears on her face was thought of as it would show her inside and true emotions, and the use of the other half of the bland picture would emphasis her struggle but efforts to keep the emotions hidden, and the struggle to remain normal.

With this idea we wanted to make sure that the target audience understand that the main character has spilt personalities. We were  thinking to place some images of our main character beside her and as they fade out she becomes more distraught and crazy.

Interviews & Reactions

This is the video showing the audiences reactions when they were watching our film as you can see we then later interviewed our target audience teenage girls but we also interviewed a teenage boy to see if the the opposite sex would also get the plot of the film. Those who did not want to be interviewed at the ended we got them to write down the films strengths and improvements of our horror film.

Evaluation Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

Audience Profile

As you know our target audience is a range of young females from 16yrs- 20yrs. Carlita Patel is 18 years and 3 months old she enjoys TV dramas such as; Hollyoaks, Skins, Eastenders, Misfits, Revenge, Body of Proof etc. and she also enjoy film such as; Taken, The Ward, Chucky, Child Play, Psycho they would also enjoy The Afterlife etc.
She is a simple T-shrit and trousers girl who love to accessorise from the United Kingdom. She enjoys watching films at the cinema with her friends, going out to eat and shopping. She shops in places like H&M, New Look, Miss Selfridge and Topshop. She also enjoys listening to the new release in the charts such as Chris Brown, Drake, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Adele, Professor Green, Ne-yo, Beyonce, David Guetta etc.
Here are a few screen shots of her Twitter and Facebook pages
Twitter
Here is a screenshot of who she follows ...

Here is Carlita's Homepage..

Facebook
We also looked at her Facebook page to see what her interest are...

Hera a video of Carlita Patel in her daily life routine we have explained why she would want to watch our task and what contrast and similarities there are between her and our main character Anna.

Evaluation Question 3 - Why we choose our production company

Explanation as to why we chose Hammer Productions

Slideshow

Evaluation Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups ?

Comparison

Between our main character Anna Smith and other character from other psychological horrors.

Girl Interrupted

Both characters facial expression here show that they are focusing on a certain point of the environment around them, whether this be an object or a person and with their mouths being open, may indicate either convocation, deep thought or disbelief. Again, both of their hair being down could imply that they are insecure and that they are trying to hide from others. A side close up of our characters face we chosen so that it was clear what angle she is viewing instead of letting the audience decide. We have tried to conform to the conventions of a typical teenage horror movie by her reactions, personality and overall take on the event that she is witnessing

This is our character compared to the character in 'Girl Interrupted'. These characters are a similar age, being young adults, and again looking similar in the sense they are wearing loose clothing with their hair down, making them look care free of their appearance. The shots chosen to present these both are taken from when they are talking, and both seem to look questioning and slightly wary.

Although we have lots of similarities between this film we also have a few differences for example the personality, even though there a both mentally unstable the character from "Girl Interrupted"seem to be more cocky and confident wheres else our character is more to herself scared and is unfamiliar with the conventions where people such as doctors and nurse try to help the unstable.

.The Ward

In this film The Ward the main character Kristen is also in some way like our main character Anna for example in appearance they both have have long let out hair they are both also waring simple white tops which can suggest insanity for example in a mental institute where they have to wear white as uniform they are also in the same posture with both arms down by their sides.

This has shaped the portrayal of our character by showing only the main aspects of her body, her face which helps provide the audience with information that suggest that she is not in the right state of mind at this period in the films. We tried to keep the stereo-typical  horror character by having a young female it suggest that she is vulnerable but we tried to change her look instead of having the typical blonde we want the target audience that this situation can happen to any one and by having brunette with blonde tips which is a popular hair choice these days we can assure that we will achieve this.

We have used a close shot in similar way to the "The Ward" shot so like that shot the audience can the emotions of the main character in detail which allows them to see how vulnerable and exposed to danger right now or in the past. We then have a shot from behind so that the audience can put them selves in the main characters position and see only what the character is seeing.

In terms of cinematography, we tried to present our character to seem delusional and to have vivid by using shot in the beginning such as the shot where she wakes up in the park and it ending in a blur whilst its then is from her point of view and we can tell that she is delusional by the spinning shot, in disruptive  flashbacks, as well as showing the audience of her age and what she is capable of.

The main horror conventions associated with our horror are taken from the way the women are looking unfamiliar and questioning as to where they are and/or who they are speaking to, which are similar with other horrors as the characters are normally displaced and are uncomfortable with their surroundings.

The Afterlife

The Afterlife is another film in which our main character Anna can be familiarised with, in this horror film the main character is also called Anna Taylor and we didn't know this when we chose our main characters name luckily we chose Anna Smith. They also have a similar physic they are both brunettes and even though they are standing in a different position the shots are both mid shots and have been taken so that it allows the audience to see the scenario and there body positions so that the audience can read there body language for example the body language that our character has comes off as unprepared and insecure towards the environment around here.

his shot also allows the audience to view the facial expression and with the picture I have chosen you can compare that both characters have different emotions at these shots in the both films, for example in our task our characters facial expression is both confused and scared of what could happen which i think is good because it help to also get the audience in that same emotion which is why the next scene of herself in the shower is so shocking and scares the audience because the facial expression help to build up that tension.

The facial in "The Afterlife" is completely the opposite to our because she has her arm on the door suggest she is going to close which could help suggest what she is feeling. The fact that the character has a sly and revengeful expression on her face helps build tension for the audience allowing them to subtly know that there maybe be a fight scene is coming up or a scene where someone will get hurt or be in danger.

Comparing them together I think what they most have in common would be the horror conventions, the fact that they are both girls sets up the movie being about how vulnerable and how weak there are if not in a physical way then an emotional and mental way.

Evaluation Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Still Photo Frame

In the first which is the top right corner I have chosen to place the Demon part of the title  We decided to have the main title in three different parts as it enters dramatically fading in, zooming out then fading out the music changes and their is a big dramatic bang as each word of the title appears. We chose the title 'The Demon Human' because like the movie it is confusing but once you watch the opening you be able to understand that is why we have chosen to end our opening sequence with the title and not start with it.

The second shot I chose top left is of the setting and location we have chosen to show the location in a med shot show that the audience can see the house her and that it is on the corner of the street. we chose this location so that the audience can feel that this type of situation can happen any where because it has a very normal atmosphere to it.

My third frame I chose show our main character props and outfit. As you can see we have chosen a very urban look for our main character and she is dressed in ripped jeans and a baggy hoodie we chose the outfit because we thought that its the costume appropriate for her situation because she has had a hard time and has just escaped a mental institute which is where our prop of the hospital tag later comes in to clarify that she is crazy.

The fourth frame I chose is to show our camera work and I chose this shot because it is a great shot because it focuses on the knees and scratches which allows the audience to know that she has gone through dangerous situations, it also it focuses on the front of the playground but it blurs out the scenario in the background this is good effect because it creates the feeling towards the audience that she in mentally unstable.

The fifth frame I chose is of the first shot where you see the main character face and her emotions it introduces for the first time and you can see that she is just standing and looking at the house with remorse and that when the flashback happens. This shot also introduces our main character as a person who has had a lot to deal with in the past that just by looking at something like a house can remind her of her story.

The sixth frame I have chosen is of a transaction and its show our special effects and editing skills. We purposely made the transaction in this specific place because it is where our main character is climbing down the slide but then it transcends to her point of view and you can tell that she isn't seeing the world in a humane way.

Frame number seven is to show the story and how the opening sets it up. I have chosen this frame because it is a the start if the flashback which is what tells part of thew characters story and sets out the rest of the film as in there might be more flashbacks through the rest of the film.

The last frame I have chosen shows the genre of our task and is of the main character dead in the shower wearing a hospital gown, when we show this scene there is also a loud bang and that helps release all the suspense that was building up to that point. This shower scene is the main part of the opening that tells the audience that they are about to be watching a horror film.

To Ask After Watching the Opening

Theses are the Question we are planing to ask the people who came to watch the opening, It will help us to understand what they think on the plot and whether or not our target audience would go and watch the rest of the film.

What part of the poster encouraged you to come here today?
Did you understand the film opening? If not why?
What sub genre do you think this film is?
How does this film compare to other films in the same category?
How do you think the main character is being represented?
Does the storyline suit the film sub genre?
What did you like about this opening? Any shots or effect you specially liked?
What would you change? Or do differently after watching the opening?
Would you watch the rest of the film after watching this opening?

Our Final Task Final

Film Title

After finishing our editing we took another look at the title of our opening sequences and have decided to change the film name, here are some of our thoughts;

More Than Human was our first idea but here are others similar
What Lies Around
Whats Left Behind
The Voice Beneath
The Demons Voice
The Demons Human

After lots and lots of time negotiating we have to decided to go with the last idea, so our main task is now called ..... The Demon Human

RANK Productions More Than Human FirstEdited Draft

This is our first final edited draft we are going to make some changes in the soundtrack for certain part of our task and we are going to make the start a bit longer where Anna is looking at the house. We are also going to change the transaction, audio and effect on the flashback because we feel that they need some work so that the audience know for sure that they are flashbacks. Finally we are going to change the ending, we are not going to have her being attack it will now just end at a close up of her realising that she is not in the shower dead.

Filming Times

Since we have decided to change most of our main task we have to re-film a lot so we hav chosen a days which are;

22nd February 2013- Because all of our group only has two classes in the morning we decided to film from 12:00 pm to around 18:00pm we hope to get most of the re-filming done

23rd February 2013 - Is a Saturday and we have chosen to use that day to refilm any mistake is we have made any on the previous day and if not to pick out our soundtracks and make some process with our fonts.

R-A-N-K Main Task NO 1

After filming our main task we then realised that we had some un-answered question from the audience so that is when we decided to re-film our main task with some changes in the plot.

This is our first attempt at what we thought we where going to use but since many of the our target audience has had question such as; Whose house is she in?, Does she know the owner of the house? If so why did she sleep in a park?
Because of these question we have decided to redo our main plot. It will still follow the same theme but we have decided to replace our beginning some of the middle and ending because we feel this will be less confusing and is sure to deliver better quality

The beginning will change from her waking up in the park to her being already outside the house. So we will longer keep the clips of her running toward the house.
The middle will change from her looking around the kitchen to her looking around upstairs and in the bathroom
The ending will change because instead of her holding the knife and the owner of the house being in danger she will now be the one in danger.

We feel as though this will not only help the audience understand our main task but we also grab the audience attention much more than our first idea and even though we have been told that changing our idea will cut away some of our editing time we have decided to go along with it as we can do our editing in our free time.
Although we have changed most of our clips we have decided to keep some of our old clips the ones we feel are too good to lose so we will be keeping some of our park shot where is waking up and some of the running in the dark shot and will make them into a flashback, we are also going to film in the same location and the character will wear the same clothing and make-up on which also highlights that the flashbacks are not long ago.

Script

It is much of a script we are just going to have Anna shouting out her friends name Jess who is the owner of the house and who Anna is looking for when she goes in the home casually.

As Media RANK Behind The Scene

These are the behind the scenes whilst filming on the 26th of January these is just a quick video showing the locations, the Mise en scene, the Make- up and the costumes.

Tuesday, 29 January 2013

Filming Times

These are the days we filmed so far;

26th January 2013, 11am- 6pm- We filmed most of our task, outside and inside scene are done

2nd February 2013 11am - 3pm- We did some re-filming of the shot we did wrong previously and managed to get it done all in that day.

Title Font and Colours

We are looking at what font and colouring we should use for our opening sequence.

Production Name- Our production is RANK and for the first clip we will need to show our logo and production name we would like to present it with the colour red as red is normally portrayed as blood and will go well with our plot

Logo- For our logo we would have come up with several logos and think that our best one is the droplet of blood this is because in our task we will have blood and it will go well with the colour of our production name .

Credits- For our credits will are looking at a website called "Da Font"( http://www.dafont.com/ ) where it has many font for us to chose which one will go best we the theme of our plot. As an example we have though about using a font called "Frisky Vampire" but we do not want to use the same font for the title of our task so we have not decided whether or not to use it but we have decided that since we have changed the plot we have any dark scene so we thought that the credits should be in white so that they are contrasted with the clips.

Title- Our title for our main task is called "More Than Human" we chose this because it because of our plot our main character (Anna Smith) has just escaped a mental institute after being diagnosed with Hallucinogen and has had some unusual side effects which is why we think "More Than Human" is appropriate. We are going to see what the title looks like in "Frisky Vampire but we know we will want it in a blood red colour to assure the target audience that it is a horror film.

Production Name Logos

After lots of logos that one of our group member Aalisha has drawn out on her software where it allows her to draw free hand on it then transfers on the computer we have decided to go with the simple blood droplet because we think that the simply logo contrast our main task but at the same time allows the audience know what film they are about to watch.
As you know R.A.N.K stands for all of our team names Rosaline, Aalisha, Naomi and Klodiana which is why we thought that it would make a good production name not only that but the word "Rank" is a slang word for disgusting which i think suits our main task perfectly.

These are some of the other logo that we cam up with

This one has a puff of smoke behind our production name we thought it was good because it adding mystery to our task.

This one was my favourite because I thought that the compas symbol went well with the personality of the character because of her being mentally ill.

This logo was design the same way as the one we are going to keep but this one has barb wire around the Rank

Production Title

Our production name is R.A.N.K we chose this name because the first letter of each of our names spell it R(osaline) A(alisha) N(aomi) K(lodiana) but the word R.A.N.K can also relate to our target audience (young adults) because the word Rank is slang for disgusting.

Sound Effects

We also thought that some of this particular clip would be great for some intense dramatic effects in where a shock or a jump is needed.

Soundtrack Ideas 2

We thought that this soundtrack would go really well when Anna Smith is running to the house but we will not use all of it but from 0:30s - 1:35s we will pick out the best parts that build up suspense and make her running more dramatic.

Soundtrack Ideas 1

We thought that part of tjhis soundtrack could be use for our flashbacks clips.

Make-up Practise

I tried to create a bruise on my arm and for that I got inspiration from a youtube clip I viewed
I got really annoyed by her voice so I watched it muted and though of what went right on the bruise.

For the bruise I used mostly eyeshadow but also used a bronzer and red lip gloss.

After the brusie trail I also looked up on how to do a cut and for this result i used the youtube clip below
I didn't follow the steps shown in the clip because I didn't have all the right material so I improvised with what i had also the cut in the video looks like it is healing when we want a cut that looks like is was done recently.

These are the material I used for the cut i used mostly red pen to emphasise the cut line.

Here are some more practise I did the next day on the rest of our group I did some cut on arm and a cut on a lip.

I also tried to create a bruise and place it around a eye, we took the photo about 3 1/ 2 hours later so by then it was really shiny but it still looked really good and some of our teachers and classmates thought it was real.

Here is the make-up on the the actor the way it will be done on the day of the filming here are some photos of the bruises around her eye and cuts on her knee and arms the bruise on her knee will be done when she falls down infront of the house she later breaks into.

Props and Costumes

* Props ;
-Watch  - Will be used when Anna is looking to see what the time is after just waking up on the park bench
- Hospital tag  - Will been show so that the audience can start to suspect that the character has some kind of illness
- Dog   - Will be used to seem as a threat to Anna as she is paranoid to anything in the outside world.
- Knife  - Will been shown numerous time in the opening to emphasise that Anna is dangerous
- Plasters  Will been shown on Anna to show that audience

* Costumes;
      - Main Character (Anna Smith) Costumes - Ripped jeans, plain T-shirt, big hoodie, rough looking trainers
We have chose this costume so that the audience can see that her appearance does not matter to her at the moment to show that she has had a rough time. We want her to look vulnerable and stereo typical  like a typical teenager through the eyes of an adult.

      -  Make up   - Cuts on arm covered with plasters, bruised face, tired looking eyes, messy hair
      - Dog walker  - Blue Jeans, Brown Leather Hoodie and Red Vans
      - Mysterious Person - Burgundy Jogging Bottom, Blue Body Warmer

What We Think Anna Smith Should Be Like

This is a trailer to The Ward and what we think Anna Smith's character should be like in our task. Since Anna Smith has recently escaped a mental institute and this trailer is of "Christian" a female who is also believed as crazy/insane we would like Anna to have same characteristics for example the bruises, messy hair this has helped our group get really create Anna.

Actor Details

Actor Details
For our main task we have chosen a member from our group to play the character, reasons as to why our actor (Rosaline) was chosen over anyone else is because she fits the image that we imagined, such as having brown/blonde, long hair, tall and looks older than the rest of our group. Our traget audience will feel like they can relate with the actor as they will be roughly the same age, and can look up to the actor which would only work if they look to be in the same age group. The fact that the actor is in the same age range within the target audience will make the audience feel as if what happens in the movie could happen to them.

Character Details

The character that Rosaline will be playing (Anna Smith) is a young adult who has just escaped from a mental hospital, and is scared she is being hunted down. Because of this intense plot the character will be shown to still have symptoms of hallucinogen related Disorder and is feeling more and more vulnerable during the process of trying to find somewhere 'safe'.
In the characters past life, she was a young adult who was succeeding in school and was on a successful path for her life ahead. The reason as to why her life was drastically changed was that her parents were killed in a severe car accident, and passed away. After dealing with this Anna Smith was forced to live with her aunts and became involved with drugs with the wrong crowd at school. After a period of 6 months Anna's Aunt found out and forced Anna to commit to a rehab programme, but all went wrong as Anna's withdrawal symptoms were not normal and had no choice but to go to a mental hospital, where the therapists and scientists realised just how severe her symptoms were. And this is where we pick up from. In our opening sequence we will show her coping after escaping from the hospital, and after our sequence this is when the film would reverse back and show the audience why and how she has became in this position.

Rough Storyboard

These are some really quick storyboards just so we can have a more clear idea of what we are going to film and what shot we are going to use. Not all the shot drawn will be used and we might change some/all of the shots as we film but it is just to lead us through our project.
___________________________________________________________

Our first shot would be of the main character waking up on a park bench. We have chosen to use a long shot here so that the audience can see the surroundings and situations she is in. She has just woken up from a rough night. She is wearing jeans a hoodie she seems cold and scared.

_____________________________________________________________

In our second shot we have a establishing shot to show the audience the scenario the main character is in. She looks around to where she is and that's when the audience can see that she is in a park.
_____________________________________________________________

Here we have used a long  shot to allow the audience to see that the character is moving around. In this scene you be able to see that she is moving around and can see her expression of her faced which will seem scared and sad.

_______________________________________________________________

We also used another long shot so we can tell on that what the main character is doing. In this scene she is standing up looking at her watch to see what time it is. She then looks around at the people around that area.

_______________________________________________________________

This mid shot is of the main character but it will also capture some the the events going on behind her. In this scene she has seen what she thinks is a suspicious character but really is just walking their dog, but she thinks the character is dangerous and after her.

_________________________________________________________

This would be another long shot to allow the audience to see what is happening and to view the surroundings. In this scene the audience can see that she has started to run because she is scared of the suspicious character with the dog.

________________________________________________________

This is a shot of the main character falling down after running too fast away form the suspicious character and looking at the house we have chosen that she will brake into, we have used  a long shot because it allows the audience to see all this.

_________________________________________________________

Here is a scene when the main character is knocking on the door that has been chosen and we have chosen a long shot so that the audience can see her knocking but also see that the house looks empty. and that no one is home which is why she then decides to brake in.

__________________________________________________________
We have decided to use a mid shot zooming on to a close up on a window in front of the house to show the audience that she is about t brake in through the window tat has been left open.
_____________________________________________________________
A close up has been used here to show that audience how she is struggling to brake in to the house.
_______________________________________________________________
We are going to use a variates of shot in this scene but most will be Long and mid shot so that the audience can take p information of the kind on people that live in that house whilst she is panicking and walking around she is always looking back.

______________________________________________________________
A long shot is used in this scene where she hears some one at the door trying to open the front door by twisting the key. We will then do a close up of the movement of the lock and door handle to add a dramatic suspense.
________________________________________________________________
A close up is going to be used so that the audience can see what the main character is doing when she panics and pick up a knife from the kitchen.
_________________________________________________________________
We are planing to use a long shot so that the audience can see where tat she is looking for a place to hid  and that she then choses to hide behind the door.

_________________________________________________________________
A close up here to show the audience just how dangerous the weapon she has chosen is to add suspense to the following scene.
_________________________________________________________________
The last shot will be of the main characters face and it will zoom in from a long shot to a close up. In his scene the audience will hear the footsteps of the character coming into the house and her reaction.
