Final Task and Preliminary Task

Final Task
The Demon Human

Preliminary Task

Evaluation Question 7 - Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Tagged Final Piece

I have added taggs to our final piece to explain what we used that we haven't before in our preliminary task why we used this specific techniques and what effect I hope it had on the audience as they are watching.

Looking back from our preliminary task to our final task we have improve because we took a lot more time with our main task and had a lot more planning and research involved than our preliminary task.

We looked more in to what our film should be about and looked up different types of psychological horror for inspiration on how we would represent a plot in a two minute opening sequence. After our final piece I feel much more comfortable with filming and editing especially, than I did in our preliminary task because I know know about the different conventions of camera angles and how different ones can suggest different emotions or how editing can create different atmosphere such as a soundtrack can change the whole mood to your piece. I feel that I have learnt a lot but still hope to develop my knowledge on the film industry.

Evaluation Question 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Technologies Video

Here is a video put together to present what we learnt durring the proccess of our main task and what we use to create and finalise the opening.

Evaluation Question 5 - How would you attract/address your audience?

Poster

For our inspiration of our poster we have looked at 'The Afterlife' poster which also has the the three ghostly effect of their main character. We have also looked 'The Ward' poster who has also inspired us to put the other two images of the main character by her sides in different ways. We have chosen to use red font because it is a horror and because red is the connotation for blood and lust but we have chosen whiten for the other writing in white because we think white can relate to insanity and mental institutes.
We blanked out the eyes to attract our audience and to inform the audience that she is a crazy person who is being possessed and is longer human.
We added the other two images of her so that the audience can see that she has different personalities through the film and that the game is actually within herself.

Poster Ideas

The first idea we had was to have an extreme close up of an eye of our main character Anna Smith and in the centre of the eye have a dark gloomy image perhaps of her standing up this would be a good way to portray our character as a mental person because it gives the sense that she is lost which is why the picture would have been an image of Anna at her worst state looking scared, distraught and vulnerable.

The idea above shows half of our main character as a normal young lady and the other half as a distraught with dirt and blood on her face, we came up with this idea because we wanted to show the contrast between the two personality of the same character. We put blood and tears on her face was thought of as it would show her inside and true emotions, and the use of the other half of the bland picture would emphasis her struggle but efforts to keep the emotions hidden, and the struggle to remain normal.

With this idea we wanted to make sure that the target audience understand that the main character has spilt personalities. We were  thinking to place some images of our main character beside her and as they fade out she becomes more distraught and crazy.

Interviews & Reactions

This is the video showing the audiences reactions when they were watching our film as you can see we then later interviewed our target audience teenage girls but we also interviewed a teenage boy to see if the the opposite sex would also get the plot of the film. Those who did not want to be interviewed at the ended we got them to write down the films strengths and improvements of our horror film.

Evaluation Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

Audience Profile

As you know our target audience is a range of young females from 16yrs- 20yrs. Carlita Patel is 18 years and 3 months old she enjoys TV dramas such as; Hollyoaks, Skins, Eastenders, Misfits, Revenge, Body of Proof etc. and she also enjoy film such as; Taken, The Ward, Chucky, Child Play, Psycho they would also enjoy The Afterlife etc.
She is a simple T-shrit and trousers girl who love to accessorise from the United Kingdom. She enjoys watching films at the cinema with her friends, going out to eat and shopping. She shops in places like H&M, New Look, Miss Selfridge and Topshop. She also enjoys listening to the new release in the charts such as Chris Brown, Drake, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Adele, Professor Green, Ne-yo, Beyonce, David Guetta etc.
Here are a few screen shots of her Twitter and Facebook pages

We also looked at her Facebook page to see what her interest are...

Hera a video of Carlita Patel in her daily life routine we have explained why she would want to watch our task and what contrast and similarities there are between her and our main character Anna.

Evaluation Question 3 - Why we choose our production company

Explanation as to why we chose Hammer Productions

Slideshow

Evaluation Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups ?

Comparison

Between our main character Anna Smith and other character from other psychological horrors.

Girl Interrupted

Both characters facial expression here show that they are focusing on a certain point of the environment around them, whether this be an object or a person and with their mouths being open, may indicate either convocation, deep thought or disbelief. Again, both of their hair being down could imply that they are insecure and that they are trying to hide from others. A side close up of our characters face we chosen so that it was clear what angle she is viewing instead of letting the audience decide. We have tried to conform to the conventions of a typical teenage horror movie by her reactions, personality and overall take on the event that she is witnessing

This is our character compared to the character in 'Girl Interrupted'. These characters are a similar age, being young adults, and again looking similar in the sense they are wearing loose clothing with their hair down, making them look care free of their appearance. The shots chosen to present these both are taken from when they are talking, and both seem to look questioning and slightly wary.

Although we have lots of similarities between this film we also have a few differences for example the personality, even though there a both mentally unstable the character from "Girl Interrupted"seem to be more cocky and confident wheres else our character is more to herself scared and is unfamiliar with the conventions where people such as doctors and nurse try to help the unstable.

.The Ward

In this film The Ward the main character Kristen is also in some way like our main character Anna for example in appearance they both have have long let out hair they are both also waring simple white tops which can suggest insanity for example in a mental institute where they have to wear white as uniform they are also in the same posture with both arms down by their sides.

This has shaped the portrayal of our character by showing only the main aspects of her body, her face which helps provide the audience with information that suggest that she is not in the right state of mind at this period in the films. We tried to keep the stereo-typical  horror character by having a young female it suggest that she is vulnerable but we tried to change her look instead of having the typical blonde we want the target audience that this situation can happen to any one and by having brunette with blonde tips which is a popular hair choice these days we can assure that we will achieve this.

We have used a close shot in similar way to the "The Ward" shot so like that shot the audience can the emotions of the main character in detail which allows them to see how vulnerable and exposed to danger right now or in the past. We then have a shot from behind so that the audience can put them selves in the main characters position and see only what the character is seeing.

In terms of cinematography, we tried to present our character to seem delusional and to have vivid by using shot in the beginning such as the shot where she wakes up in the park and it ending in a blur whilst its then is from her point of view and we can tell that she is delusional by the spinning shot, in disruptive  flashbacks, as well as showing the audience of her age and what she is capable of.

The main horror conventions associated with our horror are taken from the way the women are looking unfamiliar and questioning as to where they are and/or who they are speaking to, which are similar with other horrors as the characters are normally displaced and are uncomfortable with their surroundings.

The Afterlife

The Afterlife is another film in which our main character Anna can be familiarised with, in this horror film the main character is also called Anna Taylor and we didn't know this when we chose our main characters name luckily we chose Anna Smith. They also have a similar physic they are both brunettes and even though they are standing in a different position the shots are both mid shots and have been taken so that it allows the audience to see the scenario and there body positions so that the audience can read there body language for example the body language that our character has comes off as unprepared and insecure towards the environment around here.

his shot also allows the audience to view the facial expression and with the picture I have chosen you can compare that both characters have different emotions at these shots in the both films, for example in our task our characters facial expression is both confused and scared of what could happen which i think is good because it help to also get the audience in that same emotion which is why the next scene of herself in the shower is so shocking and scares the audience because the facial expression help to build up that tension.

The facial in "The Afterlife" is completely the opposite to our because she has her arm on the door suggest she is going to close which could help suggest what she is feeling. The fact that the character has a sly and revengeful expression on her face helps build tension for the audience allowing them to subtly know that there maybe be a fight scene is coming up or a scene where someone will get hurt or be in danger.

Comparing them together I think what they most have in common would be the horror conventions, the fact that they are both girls sets up the movie being about how vulnerable and how weak there are if not in a physical way then an emotional and mental way.

Evaluation Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Still Photo Frame

In the first which is the top right corner I have chosen to place the Demon part of the title  We decided to have the main title in three different parts as it enters dramatically fading in, zooming out then fading out the music changes and their is a big dramatic bang as each word of the title appears. We chose the title 'The Demon Human' because like the movie it is confusing but once you watch the opening you be able to understand that is why we have chosen to end our opening sequence with the title and not start with it.

The second shot I chose top left is of the setting and location we have chosen to show the location in a med shot show that the audience can see the house her and that it is on the corner of the street. we chose this location so that the audience can feel that this type of situation can happen any where because it has a very normal atmosphere to it.

My third frame I chose show our main character props and outfit. As you can see we have chosen a very urban look for our main character and she is dressed in ripped jeans and a baggy hoodie we chose the outfit because we thought that its the costume appropriate for her situation because she has had a hard time and has just escaped a mental institute which is where our prop of the hospital tag later comes in to clarify that she is crazy.

The fourth frame I chose is to show our camera work and I chose this shot because it is a great shot because it focuses on the knees and scratches which allows the audience to know that she has gone through dangerous situations, it also it focuses on the front of the playground but it blurs out the scenario in the background this is good effect because it creates the feeling towards the audience that she in mentally unstable.

The fifth frame I chose is of the first shot where you see the main character face and her emotions it introduces for the first time and you can see that she is just standing and looking at the house with remorse and that when the flashback happens. This shot also introduces our main character as a person who has had a lot to deal with in the past that just by looking at something like a house can remind her of her story.

The sixth frame I have chosen is of a transaction and its show our special effects and editing skills. We purposely made the transaction in this specific place because it is where our main character is climbing down the slide but then it transcends to her point of view and you can tell that she isn't seeing the world in a humane way.

Frame number seven is to show the story and how the opening sets it up. I have chosen this frame because it is a the start if the flashback which is what tells part of thew characters story and sets out the rest of the film as in there might be more flashbacks through the rest of the film.

The last frame I have chosen shows the genre of our task and is of the main character dead in the shower wearing a hospital gown, when we show this scene there is also a loud bang and that helps release all the suspense that was building up to that point. This shower scene is the main part of the opening that tells the audience that they are about to be watching a horror film.

To Ask After Watching the Opening

Theses are the Question we are planing to ask the people who came to watch the opening, It will help us to understand what they think on the plot and whether or not our target audience would go and watch the rest of the film.

What part of the poster encouraged you to come here today?
Did you understand the film opening? If not why?
What sub genre do you think this film is?
How does this film compare to other films in the same category?
How do you think the main character is being represented?
Does the storyline suit the film sub genre?
What did you like about this opening? Any shots or effect you specially liked?
What would you change? Or do differently after watching the opening?

Draft 2 "More Than Human"

This is our final edited opening sequences we stil might make some changes like the music although we really like the soundtrack from the horro film The Raven its copyright so we will hav to change the track completely. We are also unsure if we are going to keep our film title as More Than Human or not.
